Bamboo, tea and parades bring Fairies out for fun
When it is too hot to dig we take some time to see plants, lunch & shop. Hard job, but some one has to do it! August 27th 2005, we visited Exotica Nursery located at 2134 44th St. South in Gulport Florida. The nursery's owner, Michael Lenas gave us a most interesting and informative tour. We were really impressed with the nurseries street side meandering path that features many mature species of bamboo and exotic tropicals. Some of our favorites bamboos were GIANT BLACK BAMBOO/Phyllostachys nigra punctata, Bambusa ventricosa BUDDHA'S BELLY and GIANT GRAY BAMBOO Phyllostachy nigra 'Henon'.
Next, we were off to downtown Gulport, where a street festive was going on and we found some nice plants to buy. Thinking we were going to Adega Cafe & Wine Bar - a Portuguese Restaurant, we ended up in a new restaurant in that location. The food was good and we were out for an adventure... so all's well, that starts with plants and ends up with a good meal.

Garden Fairies take to the road
Garden
Fairy Heather did a wonderful job organizing our once in awhile tradition
of renting a trolley to see the select Pinellas county holiday neighborhood
light shows.
We started off at the restaurant where Heather works in
Belleair and then proceeded south. Everytime we have done this event
we have had cold weather, which gives us a chance to sport our cold weather
ensembles.
This particular night was really chilly (yes, Virginia, Florida does get nippy in the winter.)
One year we made a stop to an assisted living facility to spread cheer and then got on the trolley. But this year, still in recovery mode from three hurricanes and our first garden tour, we opted to make it simple and just go for a ride.
Pictured around the table are three fine Fairies; Betsy, Linda and Shannon. Enjoying themselves after being delivered in a truck to the mystery location (courtesy of our wonderful Wizard Todd). Kiaralinda and Siobhan were the perpetrators of this affair.
We held the
Fairies hands and had them keep their eyes closed until we got them
into this lovely room... Were they thinking they were somewhere in England
perhaps?

No,
they definitely knew they were still in America, because when they
opened their eyes the room was filled with the Red Hat Ladies! Everyone
of the Fairies thought this was part of the surprise, but alas it just
a wonderful coincidence.

The Red Hat Ladies
just loved meeting the Fairies. It was like a happening for mature
women with spunk.

In the future we
hope to do a Murder Mystery. I have a script we can use (from a Murder
Mystery Party I did for a group of lawyers) so all we need is a cast
of characters who are interested. Email me if
this sounds like something you would like to do.

Mardi Gras Parade
Tuesday, the scheduled day for the Dunedin Mardi Gras parade was a washout, but we had wonderful weather for the "Tardy Mardi" on February 28th.
<<The smallest (and dare we say cutest float in the parade). The wings are made out of interfacing, wire and two hula hoops and attached with suction cups. This vehicle was road tested at 30 miles an hour. What a relief it was when the whole apparatus held together!
We lead the parade with our Fairy mobile, a lime green VW beetle which was driven by Wizards Jesus and assisted by Dave. The costume making was a ton of fun. More than once we have commented to each other, making is as much fun as we doing. This certainly held true for this event.
It was amazing process, making fabulous
fun outfits and decorations out of cardboard.
The police questioned our entry to the lineup for the parade, questioning the fairy mobile's validity as a float. Well, the judges must have thought we qualified because they awarded our group with first prize. We were part of the Kelly's/Chicaboom Room (restaurants in Dunedin, FL) contingent, singled out for our creativity and energy. Yeah- that sound like the Garden Fairies!.
Thanks to Kiaralinda for inspiring
us, who had been inspired by the people of the Bahamas, masters of
wearable cardboard creations. Also, thanks to Jennie and Bert for hosting
the outfit making party and to Cathy from Kelly's for being a Goddess of
organization.
And of course, to our flock of fairies and wizards who love to strut their stuff.
